MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID

About this course

This  Mental Health First Aid course is for both the workplace and the wider community groups or singles, the tools and skilled gained can provide early intervention and initial mental health first aid support to someone who can then be transferred on for professional treatment.
You will learn the most up-to-date Mental Health First Aid techniques to assist an adult who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis until appropriate professional help is received or the crisis resolves, using a practical, evidence-based action plan.
This course is based on guidelines developed through expert consensus of people with lived experience of mental health problems and professionals.

Course Content

Mental health crisis situations covered are:

• Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
• Traumatic events
• Severe effects of drug or alcohol use
• Severe psychotic states
• Aggressive behaviour
• Non-suicidal self-injury (sometimes called deliberate self-harm)
• Panic attacks

Developing mental health problems covered are:

• Anxiety problems
• Psychosis
• Depression
• Substance use problems

Course Components

Full face to face

1. Face-to-face 2 day course
   The face-to-face 2 day theory and practical course gives you the opportunity to learn in a group setting. You will then practice the newly learned skills and receive trainer feedback before completely assessment tasks.

Blended learning

1. Online learning and assessment (up to 6-8 hour to complete)
   The online video learning component allows you the time and space to learn and complete theory assessment at your own pace, when and wherever you want! Actual duration of this component will vary depending on your past experience and knowledge. You will need access to a computer and the internet to complete this part of your course. If this is difficult for you we can arrange access for you – just give us a call! You must have successfully completed the online assessment prior to attending the practical face to face component of the course. You gain an elearning certificate of successful completion of this online course you than need to arrange the face to face component within 3 months.
2. Face-to-face practical session (4 hours duration)
   This face-to-face practical session gives you the opportunity to learn the applied skills, practice them and receive trainer feedback and then complete assessment tasks.
3. Final multiple choice online assessment

Course Requirements

To successfully complete this course, you must:

• Be 18 years of age or over,
• Have literacy skills to be able to read the mental health first aid course material and action plan.
• Have the ability to complete a workplace Incident Report.
• Have a level of oral communication that enables them to engage with the distressed person and accurate verbal reports to emergency response services and workplace supervisors.
• Access to a Computer and basic computer skills
• No prerequisites for this course

Certificates

On successful completion of all course components, providing all online and practical competencies are met you will be issued a Certificate of Accreditation which is recognised by Mental Health First Aid Australia.

You will be required to log-in and create a Learner account. We will get back to you with the results and discuss any required support we can provide or refer you to other suitable support agencies.
